How to Save Money on Groceries for Beginners

Firstly, and of major importance, wait for the sales. If you pay full price you are throwing your money out the window. Plan ahead to shop the sales and save in the range of 30-50% off the full shelf price just for the effort.

Next, you should become brand un-loyal. By brand un-loyal I mean that you are willing to try any brand to save a few dollars. Is one nationally known brand really worth a lot more than the other? Truth be told, usually not, but being loyal to one brand inflates your food bills by up to a third. Be willing to look for cheaper alternatives and keep an open mind.

Still something else you should know is that there is huge savings to be found by shopping seasonal sales if you stock up. Buying a few extra items when the prices are half or more off saves big money. Why is this? Grocery marketers often put seasonal produce and products you need for holidays on sale as loss leaders right before a major holiday. Loss leaders are a great deal and sold below wholesale to try to get you into the store to do all your shopping. Learning to spot loss leaders is a good way to get some really huge savings.

Finally, be aware that coupons do save you a lot of cash if you use them correctly. Correct coupon use saves most families thousands of dollars a year.

Thousands every year for years and years? How do you save that much?
