A simple way to track prices on your favorite items and plan your shopping better is by using a “Price Book”. By keeping track of the unit price of your favorite products you can quickly see if advertising promos like “buy 1, get 1 free” are really offering you a deal or not.
Keeping a price book will allow you to do a quick comparison of the average unit price versus the sales price that is being offered.
There are many ways to keep a price book and the best way to do it is to make it work for you. You can just use a spiral bound notebook or even use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of the prices.
Here are some quick tips to get started.
· Save all of your grocery store receipts. Make a list and start inputting the prices for the items that you buy most often. After 4 or 5 weeks you will begin to have a good idea of the lowest “unit price” on an item. Make sure and take note of the store where you shopped. It is also a good idea to shop around, as you will soon find the store that usually has the lowest price for the item.
· Buy a small 3-ring binder or notebook. If you use a spreadsheet you can print it out and put it in your binder. If you just use a notebook you can tear out the sheets to put into your binder. A binder works well because you can remove and organize the information as you go.
· Make a page for each major category. To start with just use the main categories, produce, dairy, meat, canned goods, boxed goods and snacks. You can always add to your lists and pages as you go.
· Create columns to list your information. Make a column each for the product including the brand and the size, the unit price, the sale price, the store name and the date of purchase. It will look something like this:
· Product / Unit Price / Sale price / Store / Date of purchase
· As you get your receipts start filling in the information. Soon you will have a basis for your comparison-shopping and you will start seeing the history. It won’t take long for you to discover which stores typically have the lowest price.
· Use your book as you peruse the sales ads and make sure you take it when you shop. This information is only valuable if you use it.
The goal of the price book is to give you valuable information that you can refer to when you see an advertised special. You can instantly know if the sale is really worthwhile.
You can also determine which stores offer you the best deals for your money and where and on what items you can save the most.
Because, it all adds up!
