Food Navigation For The Superstore

by Mike Jones on May 26, 2009

When navigating the supermarket the best strategy is to shop the perimeters first. The bulk of supermarkets are set up in a comparable fashion. Perhaps there is a basis or it may be just for convenience. Even so generally supermarkets will do anything they can to help you the consumer get as much as possible.

A grocery store is set up so that the perishable things, which are also the healthiest items, are around the outside border of the store. The fruits and vegetables, the dairy products and the meat department and deli are all around the edges of the store. The less processed and healthier foods are all set up there. These foods also tend to be the greatest value nutritionally. Most stores will also set up sale items at the edge of the aisles.

In the center of the store is where you will find the canned goods, boxed goods, and all of the extremely processed foods counting cookies, candies, potato chips, beverages and more. Customarily these tend to be closer to the produce section of the store.

On over you will find the paper products, cleaning products and beauty products. Generally towards the front and side of the store is where you will find the pharmacy and if the store has an in store bank it is also usually also towards the front and the side.

At some supermarkets you will come across the frozen things in the middle but infrequently you will discover them on the side. Sometimes there will be the frozen section in the center and the chilled section on the sides next to the dairy.

The best way to expand your nourishment for your cash is to pile up on the healthiest things first. That means that you should shop around the perimeters to begin with and stay away from the middle except when required. Most of food in the middle tends to be extremely processed but there are a few exceptions like whole grain pastas and slow cooking oatmeal.

By planning your shopping in advance and having your coupons with you, you can save time by going right to the things on your list and you will also be able to stay away from impulse buying, which affects your budget.

If you check out most of the stores in your locale you will soon find out which ones have the lowest prices and which ones will accommodate you the best when you are using your coupons and rebates.
